SERVING UP SEASONAL SPECIALITIES AND MOUTH-WATERING FAVOURITES

The Old White Swan is one of many rare gems in the Nicholson's collection of great British pubs, reputed for their distinctive buildings, intriguing history and vibrant atmosphere. As one of York's most iconic pubs, we have a varied and fascinating history dating back to the 16th Century. Famed for exhibiting the 8 foot 'Irish Giant', the world's tallest man in 1781. We are one of York's oldest pubs and as such have our fair share of ghostly goings on! Furniture has been known to move in the night, with chairs being rearranged around the fireplace! Muffled voices, keys jingling and footsteps are also often heard. The ghostly image of a hanging man has been seen in the rafters above our Stagecoach bar. Could this be the Victorian ex-landlord who took his own life when he could no longer afford his bills? Step in to discover a traditional pub of unique character, revered for its eclectic range of real ales and its quality pub food, which are served, as they should be, with a generous measure of famous British hospitality.
