Ozkan first came to the UK back in 2004 after a very successful career in Turkey, bringing with him his love for sharing his native and Mediterranean food. In 2008 after undertaking the role as head chef for a local 5 star restaurant, Ozkan decided to take the plunge into the world off business and bought the Shay Café based near the Shay Stadium in Halifax. After making the café a huge success Firat, Ozkan’s brother joined him in 2009. Firat brought his wealth of knowledge and experience with him. Having studied at university and working within the hospitality and hotel industry for numerous years. With these combined skills it was inevitable that the brothers were set to go into business together and on June 2014 Theo’s was purchased. The first year everything was new and the learning curve began, but we have to say what a year it was. The business went from strength to strength enabling us to make many improvements and with the new improvements came a new name and in January 2015 Theo’s was renamed Aya Sophia after Ozkan’s daughter. With the restaurant doing so well Ozkan & Firat looked for new areas in which to grow and at the beginning of 2016 the cocktail bar was opened, with the large sliding doors and outside making it a lovely area to enjoy drinks either inside or out.
